The role of the Director of Photography (DP) is both critical and creatively demanding, functioning as the cornerstone of visual expression on set. This position, blending technical acumen with artistic vision, is essential in translating conceptual ideas into striking visual narratives. The DP navigates the complex interplay of lighting, composition, and camera movement, orchestrating these elements to create an immersive and emotionally resonant experience for the viewer.

This leads us to our conversation with Chase Morales. Chase’s journey with Lemonlight has seen him helm the visual aspect of numerous projects, each with its unique challenges and triumphs. His perspective on the industry offers a window into the life of a DP and the critical role they play in bringing stories to life on screen. From discussing his favorite aspects of working with Lemonlight to sharing invaluable advice for newcomers in the industry, Chase’s insights provide a rich understanding of the world of video production. Let’s dive into his world:

How long have you worked with Lemonlight?

I’ve been working with Lemonlight for over a year.

What’s been the best part about working with Lemonlight?

The best part about working with Lemonlight as a freelance DP is being able to expand the reach I have to not only refine the quality of my work but also help local companies put their best foot forward when it comes to producing videos.

Why do you love the video production industry?

I love the video production industry because it allows me to sit down with people and hear their personal or business stories that I otherwise may have never heard, because I would’ve never met them. It’s always rewarding to use your creativity to visually amplify their stories and their voices for others to enjoy.

What’s your favorite crew meal/snack?

Food from CAVA or a strong cuban espresso on those early call times.

Advice for those just starting in the industry?

Don’t be afraid to go after any opportunities to sharpen your skills and work with people who know more than you do. The fastest way to learn is to be the person in the room who has the least experience. With that being said, take it upon yourself to learn all you can on YouTube or online in your free time and it will give you a leg up on others competing for your role on a crew. Another point is to know your worth. When you first get started, jump on every project you can, but as time goes on, learn to pick work that is good for you – where people value and respect you and the time it’s taken to learn your craft.

Finally, network and meet new people. Getting paid in “exposure” will be offered a lot when you first start. In the video production world (as well as most fields) who you know can be more important than what you know. and if you pair that with a self-learning approach, you’ll be well on your way toward success!

How has working at Lemonlight influenced or shaped your approach to video production overall?

By allowing me to lead crews and work with other members that specialize in different roles on set. When I started with Lemonlight a year and a half ago, I was working as a one man crew or at most I had one other PA on set. After working with a crew, I have the experience and the knowledge of what a good team dynamic is on set, which is crucial while leading as a DP.

What’s a behind-the-scenes story or anecdote from a project that you think best represents the video production process at Lemonlight?

Last year I had the opportunity to work on a project in Charlotte, NC that was a masterclass in video production. Not only was it an amazing full day of shooting a two camera set up, but the location was this fantastic apartment with ceiling to floor windows showcasing the view of downtown CLT. To make it even more exciting, the client was based overseas and we used a virtual video village to send live audio and video for sign off on each section of the course. All around it was a well-produced project from pre-production to post-production. I really enjoyed the quality of work I was able to help produce with the Lemonlight team on this project in particular!
