Sometimes it seems like everybody these days is always talking about podcasts. This trend shows no signs of stopping either, as for the past decade podcasts have only been growing in popularity and influence all across the world. As of 2019, there are now around 700,000 active podcasts available, which have collectively broadcast more than 29 million episodes. In fact, over half of the US population has already listened to at least one podcast episode already.

But that’s not all. During the past year alone, the percentage of people who are familiar with the term “podcast” has risen from 64% to 70%. That means even if you haven’t actually heard a podcast before, you’ve almost certainly heard of them.

The term “podcast” itself is a portmanteau coined by British tech journalist Ben Hammersley in 2004, combining the word “iPod” with “broadcast.” Much like traditional radio broadcasts, their content is wildly diverse and varied. From culture to comedy, narrative to politics, it can feel like there are no subjects left without a whole slew of long-running podcasts already dedicated to them – including video content marketing.

Whether or not you’re a fan of the podcasting medium, there’s no denying that countless experts have dedicated countless hours to it. That’s because by downloading an episode of a podcast or subscribing, you have an opportunity to unlock a treasure trove of valuable industry insight – and all of it for free.

To help you decide which podcasts are the most relevant to your interests (and which ones you can pass on) here is our list of the top eight podcasts that every content marketer should check out.

1. Social Pros Podcast

Created by marketing consulting firm Convince & Convert, Social Pros Podcast focuses on highlighting industry advice from high-level social media specialists. Unlike some content marketing podcasts, the experts featured here are more than theoreticians – the focus is always on (in their own words) “real people doing real work” in the field of social media. Co-hosts Jay Baer (the network founder) and Adam Brown consistently feature individuals already working professionally in the field of social media content sharing their hands-on insights on an array of topics, from “How to Maximize the Storytelling Impact of Your Social Media Content” to “The Power and Shortcomings of Influencer Marketing at Scale.”

2. Copyblogger.FM

Originally called Internet Marketing for Smart People, writer Sonia Simone’s podcast was reconceived as Copyblogger.FM in 2015. The general focus here is on writing, which frequently gets short shrift in the world content marketing. By tackling topics like conceiving the perfect headline, overcoming creative slumps, and yes, copywriting blogs like this one, they help content marketers make practical, effective changes with major impacts. Though “writing” is their speciality, Copyblogger.FM also delves into other aspects of the industry (such as website lifecycles and measurable outcomes), making it an expansive listen for any interested content marketer.

3. Duct Tape Marketing Podcast

If you’re looking for more of a touchy-feely listening experience, Duct Tape Marketing Podcast has got you covered. Host (and marketing guru) John Jantsch has spent over a decade interviewing some of the industry’s biggest experts. By examining their experiences, each episode breaks down topics that may initially seem more closely connected to wellness than ROI. After all, titles like “How to Discover and Nurture Your Creativity” and “How to Choose Your Life’s Purpose” don’t really scream “this is a content marketing podcast!” But balance, focus, and a well-maintained creative skillset are every bit as important as generating conversion, so why not receive a little bit of wisdom about both – all in a single podcast?

4. The Science of Social Media

Described as a “weekly sandbox for social media stories, insights, experimentation, and learning,” The Science of Social Media is a solid catch-all listen for social media-minded content marketers. Episode are short (typically ranging from 10-20 minutes) and packed with under-the-hood insights. Along with covering broader topics like “Social Media Attribution: How to Get Started,” there are also rewarding deep-dives into every major social media platform. Multiple episodes have been dedicated to Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, and more – if your brand promotes heavily on any of these platforms, you’ll especially appreciate these specific, focussed discussions.

5. Marketing School

Neil Patel is one of the biggest, most popular personalities in the world of content marketing. Eric Siu is the CEO of mega-successful digital marketing agency Single Grain. Together, these two co-hosts give Marketing School an undeniable pedigree, and catapult it to the top of any must-listen list. New episodes are posted every single day, and though they are relatively short (on average running around five minutes) they are jam-packed with powerful insights on every facet of the content marketing industry. If you want to explore the world of content marketing podcasts without making a huge commitment, this bite-sized series is the perfect place to start.

6. Marketing Over Coffee

If you prefer a more laid-back approach to learning about content marketing, try Marketing Over Coffee. As the title implies, each episode finds co-hosts John J. Wall and Christopher S. Penn sitting down with a different marketing expert at a cafe, where their conversation can unfold naturally over a hot cup of joe. The leisurely nature of these discussions can organically lead to the exploration of some unexpected and thought-provoking concepts. As a result, listening often feels more like a casual drink with a friend than a hyper-focussed lesson plan, in a good way.

7. Unthinkable

Ranked as one of the “10 Podcasts That Will Help Entrepreneurs Thrive in Their Industries” by Inc., Unthinkable is just one of several podcasts created and hosted by creativity expert Jay Acunzo. Though he is the mind behind many different shows, the specific focus of Unthinkable is examining the power of unconventional thinking throughout the world of business. While it may not be as content marketing-specific as some of the other podcasts featured on this list, its expansive philosophies can be applied to any industry. For every professional who has ever had trouble trusting their intuition or making bold changes, Unthinkable is a brilliant tool for engaging with those challenges – and overcoming them.

8. Masters of Scale

Podcast hosts don’t get much more prestigious than Reid Hoffman, billionaire entrepreneur and co-founder of LinkedIn. On Masters of Scale, Reid breaks down the ways that companies grow from start-ups to titans…or how they fall apart in the process. He interviews top industry leaders, from Arianna Huffington to Gwyneth Paltrow, and–more importantly–explores how their hard-won success can be applied to brands at any level. Like Unthinkable, this may not be a podcast that’s specifically about the world of content marketing. However, every industry struggles with scale, and beyond the lessons to be learned, Masters of Scale is one of the most flawlessly-produced podcasts available.
